Creating bilingual, bi-literate and cross-culturally aware learners
Kennewick School District’s Dual Language program is open to K-5 students from around around the distrct. The classrooms are located at Edison Elementary and Hawthorne Elementary schools.
Classroom instruction is a 50:50 model where fifty percent of the instruction is in English and fifty percent of the instruction is in Spanish. Half of the students in each classroom speak English at home and half of the students speak Spanish at home.
In Kindergarten, first, and second grades all the students learn to read and write in Spanish. English is used for math science and social studies. In third, fourth and fifth grades the students transition their literacy skills to read and write in English, but continue with Spanish in the content areas of math, science, and social studies.
